Dubbed "The Thinking Man's Artist," the fine art of William R. Hicks is best described with a philosophical appreciation for life.

William's work embraces the human spirit, and endeavors to inspire and enrich those who experience and acknowledge life's all-encompassing journey. Speaking to our higher selves - the side in all of us that longs to know, connect and contribute in some way to our world - William's artwork evokes a profound and heartfelt response in his audience.

A native of Southern California, William is dedicated to the arts, education, business, community, and philanthropic leadership.

William was born and raised in Manhattan Beach, California and currently lives in Marina del Rey with his wife, Elise. He has always been a gifted artist and as a child would spend hours drawing. In grade school he won an award for his pencil and ink drawing "Gretchen," the family dog. Around the same time, his design for the Downtown Manhattan Beach parking sign was chosen; the signs remain to this day.

William continued to practice his art throughout his teens; however, his interest in the human mind took him in another direction. He attended California State University in Long Beach and received a Bachelor's in Psychology. His studies have influenced the content of his work, and he has relied mostly on his natural talent and practice to produce his art.

He has been commissioned to paint several pieces and has sold several others. He has painted over 50 pieces, most of which have a depth of meaning behind them. His motivation for painting can be summed up in one sentence: He doesn't want to die with his art still inside of him. It is not merely a form of self-expression: he hopes to touch and inspire the creative genius he believes resides in all people.

William's piece "Inner Light" has been featured on musical artist Denise Fernauld's CD, "Contemplations To Peace." Her dedication reads:

"To my new friend and gifted artist, William Hicks, for the use of your inspired painting "Inner Light," that is used throughout this CD artwork."

On June 8, 2002, William donated his painting "Torch Pass" to City of Hope. He was inspired to do so when he heard Florence Henderson read "The Torchbearer's Creed" (written by the Founders of City of Hope) at City of Hope's 2001 Convention.

Signed Lithographs are available. 40% of the proceeds go to benefit Torch Foundation, which provides empowerment training for at risk youth in the greater Los Angeles area.
